What Can Breathing Do for Your Sleep?

One of the reasons that we are alive is because we breathe. Most people tend to overlook breathing for one reason or another, mostly because it is something that we do without really thinking about it. If we are suffering in some way or another in our life, however, we might be surprised to learn that breathing can actually help us in many different ways. Not that simple every day in and out breathing that we do by instinct but slow and deliberate breathing that helps to give our body some of the things that we need.

One of the things that deep breathing exercise can bring to us is help if we are dealing with sleeping disorders. Although it may only be one piece of the puzzle that we need in order to overcome these problems, it certainly is one that we should practice on a regular basis. Deep breathing calms the mind and helps to bring oxygen to parts of the body that may be deprived of it. It also helps to put us in a more relaxed state which can certainly go a long way in helping us to sleep better.

Unfortunately, most of us breathe incorrectly because we are breathing shallow instead of breathing deeply. Whenever you are at rest and breathing normally, look at your stomach. If it is going in and out, this is showing you that your diaphragm is working and you are breathing deeply. If you tend to take your breath in shallow bursts, you are not really giving your body the oxygen that it needs.

Deep breathing exercises should be a part of your evening ritual if you have insomnia. Go into a quiet part of your home and spend a little bit of time deeply breathing through your nose and slowly exhaling through your mouth. Try to concentrate on every breath that you take and push every stressful thought out of your mind. It may take a little bit of time for you to get used to doing this but eventually, you will find that you are able to put yourself into a relaxed state.

Continue breathing deeply but don’t over exaggerate it as this may actually stimulate your mind to action. Allow your mind to focus on positive thoughts and serene images while you are breathing. Not only is this going to help you to fall asleep faster, you may find that you wake up less frequently as well.

Watch What You Eat before You Sleep

Did you realize that eating before bedtime may be one of the causes of your insomnia? The fact of the matter is, having too much on your stomach whenever you go to sleep can cause some serious sleeping problems. The reason why this is the case is because it kicks in our digestive process and does not allow our body to get into the deep state of sleep that we really need in order to wake feeling refreshed. Does that mean, however, that all eating should be banished before we go to bed? The answer might surprise you.

Many of us feel that it is good to be able to eat a big meal before we go to bed because it makes us lethargic and tired. What we don’t realize, however, is the science that is going on behind that lethargic feeling. Whenever we eat the wrong kinds of foods, it releases a lot of sugar at one time into our bloodstream. In response to this onslaught, our pancreas is going to release insulin into our blood which is what causes that lethargic feeling. Yes, we may be able to fall asleep but our sleep is going to be shallow and may even be interrupted as a result of this chemical reaction.

It is a good idea, however, to eat a light snack before you go to bed. You should make sure that it is going to be something that is easily digested and is not going to cause any problems with excess sugar in our bloodstream. If you’re going to eat a couple hours before you go to bed, a little bit of bread will do nicely. If you are eating closer to bedtime, you might want to consider eating some fruit. Make sure that you don’t just eat any fruit but choose fruit that is lower on the glycemic index. This will keep the sugar from being released into your system to quickly.

If you are careful with what you eat before bedtime, you will find that you are able to sleep much better as a result. As a matter of fact, you might be able to cure your insomnia by eating the proper foods before you go to bed. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little bit with the types of foods that you are eating. Finding the right combination that helps you to sleep will be a blessing, indeed.

Using Your Body Chemistry to Fall Asleep

You might be surprised to learn how many times our body chemistry is the culprit whenever we are having a difficult time sleeping. It is not always too many chemicals in our body but it may be the lack of something that we need. If you are dealing with insomnia or having a difficult slime sleeping in any way, there are several things that you should try in order to build these imported hormones up inside of you before you try to go to sleep. You might find that it not only helps you to go to sleep faster, it may keep you asleep for longer.

The first of these chemicals that we are going to talk about is the hormone that is known as serotonin. Serotonin is present in our body for a number of different reasons but one of the main things that it does is to make us feel good. If we are having a difficult time sleeping because we tend to fret over different things before we go to bed, serotonin may help to sway the balance in our direction. This hormone is released from our body whenever we exercise so it is a good idea for us to move around a little bit through the day in order to have an abundance of it. Believe it or not, warm milk may also trigger the production of serotonin because of the tryptophan that it contains.

Another hormone that we may need which can certainly help us to fall asleep is melatonin. This is a natural sleep hormone but some of us may be deficient in it for one reason or another. This particular hormone is available as a natural supplement and has been shown in many cases to help individuals who are dealing with insomnia. By the way, it also helps a person who has jet lag for the same reason. It reset our biological clock and helps us to go through the natural cycle of sleep.

One final thing that you should do is to make sure that you have all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Taking a quality multivitamin everyday may be able to help you to bring your body into the balance that it needs. You should also make sure that you are eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables as this will also go a long way in helping to cure your insomnia.

Things That Make You Go ZZZZ

Getting a good night sleep is not only important for us but it is often important for anybody that has a deal with us on a regular basis. If you have been having problems with insomnia, you no doubt realize that can put a strain on almost every aspect of your life. Unfortunately, many of us do not know what to do in order to stop the insomnia that we are dealing with. There are some natural cures, however, that can really help you to get a good nights sleep, even if sleep seems to be something that is elusive for you.

One of the first things that can help you to get a good nights sleep which we will discuss is tea. One of the best types of tea that you can drink for this is chamomile. This unique herb has been shown to help people to rest better and this can make a big difference in whether we are able to sleep or not. There are other types of teas which can also help but you need to use caution that the tea which you choose is not actually a stimulant. The last thing that you want to have before you go to bed if you are having a hard time sleeping is caffeine.

Another thing that may help you sleep better is aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years in various parts of the earth for a number of different reasons. If you choose the right kind of scents, you will be surprised with how much this can help you to relax and sleep. Some of the most popular aromatherapy scents for insomnia include lavender, chamomile, rose and sandalwood. If you are able to add these to a nice, warm bath, you would be surprised with how relaxed you will end up feeling.

Finally, there may be an cure that is often overlooked. How often have you heard that you should drink a glass of warm milk if you are having a difficult time falling asleep? You might be surprised to learn that this is actually fairly good advice. The reason why this is the case is because warm milk contains tryptophan which can trigger the natural release of melatonin into your system. Melatonin regulates our internal body clock and helps us to fall asleep and to reach a state of deep sleep. Drinking a glass of warm milk before bed may help you more than you realize.

The Subconscious Causes Of Insomnia

There are many subconscious causes of insomnia. Often we don’t realize just how powerful our thoughts can be. Things we don’t give a second thought to that may have happened years ago can in some cases be the subconscious causes of insomnia.

Many of the subconscious causes of insomnia happen in childhood. A young child who is told that an elderly relative has died, and who learns that he or she died in their sleep, may begin to view sleep as being something potentially menacing. They might start to think that they, or their parents, may also die while asleep.

It’s easy to see that this kind of thinking could make a child scared to fall asleep. As the years go by the immediate fear of sleeping may fade, but the root fear remains as one of the subconscious causes of insomnia for that person.

Nightmares can be very frightening, again especially for children. For a child, dreams and reality can be more blurred than for an adult, especially if they are very young. Nightmares occurring, for whatever reason, can make a child afraid to go to bed, knowing what they are likely to experience. Later in life this feeling might persist and be another of the subconscious causes of insomnia.

Our subconscious mind is a very powerful entity. It controls our bodies without us having to think about it. Our breathing, blood pumping, internal thermostat, and much more are all controlled by the mysterious thing we call the subconscious. It can also control a lot more than that, sometimes creating situation we would rather not have.

Deep rooted beliefs, however silly and childish, are difficult to dislodge. They are often the subconscious causes of insomnia and more often than not we don’t know about them. We have forgotten, or we don’t think these beliefs from so long ago have any relevance. They often do though, and they can be part of the reason why we don’t sleep as good at night as we should.

Getting rid of the subconscious causes of insomnia is not easy. It may be impossible for anyone to do it on their own. Most people need the help of a psychologist or a psychiatrist to discover exactly what is at the root of their problem. Often it can take a long time to uncover the subconscious causes of insomnia. Sometimes they are never fully uncovered.

While trying to get to the bottom of the subconscious causes of insomnia, it’s also a good idea to treat your insomnia in a more traditional way. Get into the habit of relaxing before going to bed. Exercise a little in the early evening if possible to induce a feeling of being tired. Drink a small glass of warm milk shortly before retiring to bed. Do whatever you can to help you get a good night’s sleep.

The subconscious causes of insomnia can be very deep rooted indeed and be difficult to uncover. Alternatively, they may be recent, but not at all obvious. It is usually best to let a professional with experience help you to discover exactly what the subconscious causes of insomnia are.

The Effect Of Insomnia

The effect of insomnia can be wide ranging and can be very serious over time. We all need to sleep, some of us more than others, but no one can survive long without sleep. In this article we will examine the effect of insomnia on the average person; the symptoms, the effects and what you can do about it.

The effect of insomnia usually depends on which of three broad categories your insomnia falls under: transient, intermittent or chronic. Which of these categories you come under is largely a matter of the duration of your insomnia. The longer you have suffered the more likely it will be that you will come under the chronic category, for example.

The first two categories describe a condition that is generally temporary and not long lasting. The effect of insomnia that is transient is generally not severe. It can be little more than an annoyance – an irritation for a short time that rights itself and is soon largely forgotten.

The effect of insomnia that is intermittent is a little more worrying, it comes and goes and can usually be traced to a specific event that causes stress. This intermediate stage is not a cause for serious worry, though it should not be ignored either. Intermittent insomnia can easily lead on to chronic insomnia if not treated in time.

The effect of insomnia that is chronic in nature is serious. People who suffer from this degree of sleeplessness may have weakened immune systems making them more susceptible to all the ailments, such as colds and flu’s that go around.

They also usually have slowed down reaction times making them less likely to react safely in dangerous situations. This could mean an increased risk of vehicle accident if they drive a lot in heavy traffic. The effect of insomnia when it is chronic is a general lowering of normal functions.

Depression and anxiety often accompany insomnia, and are usually the cause of it. Doctors will usually prescribe antidepressants and drugs that sedate, though this usually just masks the real problem without actually addressing the root cause. Properly treating the effect of insomnia that has become chronic is not easy and will usually take time.

One typical effect of insomnia is feeling tired all the time. You may feel like taking regular naps, but you still feel tired after doing so. You may feel sluggish and lethargic all the time and you may lack enthusiasm for doing anything, even the things that used to excite you. Life becomes a chore without any highs and your friends may start to wonder what is wrong.

There are a number of simple things you can do to offset the effect of insomnia and start you back on the road to getting a good night’s sleep every night. The obvious thing is to start worrying less. Try to remove the stress in your life, especially in the evenings. Make a point, regardless of your problems, to not think about them from early evening onwards.

Try not to eat or drink too much in the evenings. Avoid alcohol if possible, as well as coffee or tea. Stimulants are often a cause of insomnia. Exercise in the early evening to try and create a feeling of tiredness. A long walk a few hours before going to bed will help a lot. Above all, try to relax and the effect of insomnia will soon be a thing of the past!

Stretch Your Way to Better Sleep

There are a lot of different things that you can do in order to help you if you are having a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep. Unfortunately, many of these things are going to take additional effort on our part but if we are persistent in doing them, we will be able to reap the rewards. Although we should make sure of what we are eating and stay away from any kind of stimulating drinks whenever it is close to bedtime, something that many people are missing is exercise.

I know what you are probably thinking. Exercising does take effort and many of us only consider exercise to be something that makes us break a sweat. The fact of the matter is, there are certain types of exercise that we can do which are actually quite relaxing. A good example of this is stretching exercises. Not only is this going to help our bodies to get into shape but it will also do so without making us go through any sort of rigorous activity.

One of the things that stretching will do for us is to release serotonin into our systems. Serotonin naturally makes us feel better and puts us into a good mood. If you are having a difficult time sleeping because you are dealing with stressful situations and cannot get them off of your mind, serotonin may be able to help you in this regard. Another reason why it is good is because it put your body back into balance which is one of the main reasons why people are dealing with insomnia in the first place. Yes, the details may differ but it is almost always a lack of balance in the body.

It is not necessary for you to do a lot of stretching on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, just getting up and stretching on occasion and then perhaps doing a stretching routine for 15 to 20 minutes per day is all that is necessary to see some changes take place. There are plenty of DVDs which you can buy that will walk you through every step of the process. Take your time and really allow your body and mind to relax whenever you’re going through your stretching exercises. You will probably find that within a week, you are able to sleep better as a result.

Many of us are unable to sleep at night because we do not prepare ourselves properly in order to get the sleep that we need. All of us live busy lives and it may be that we need a little bit of time in the evenings to be able to unwind before we actually hit the hay. If family responsibilities or work keeps you from being able to do this, trying to adjust your schedule and let everybody know what you are trying. Once you have about a half hour to yourself on a nightly basis, here are three different things that you should do in order to prepare your mind and body for sleep.

First of all, you should make sure that you are avoiding eating and drinking anything that will keep you up at night. This includes any kind of a heavy meal within a few hours of going to sleep. You will also want to make sure that you’re not drinking any caffeinated beverages within several hours of going to sleep as well. This is the first step in making sure that your body is prepared for a good nights sleep.

The next thing that you should do is to begin preparing your mind for sleep as well. Avoid watching any television shows or movies that are going to prepare your mind for action. These include mentally stimulating shows as well as shows that are action-packed. Although it may be tempting to do this in an effort to unwind before bed, you will actually find that you sleep much better if you skip the action and watch something that is a little bit more calm.

You should also take a little bit of time to read something soothing or listen to some music before you go to bed as well. If you have the ability to do so, take a nice warm bath which includes plenty of candles and some aromatherapy. Practice some deep breathing before going to bed and totally relax your mind, allowing yourself to forget about any problems that you may be facing during the day. If you are able to successfully do this, your mind will be totally prepared for a good nights sleep.

There are plenty of other things that you can do in order to make sure that you are getting the sleep that you need. By preparing in advance, however, you will make sure that you are giving yourself this opportunity and getting the sleep that you deserve.

Sleeping Disorders: The History

When we hear about sleeping disorders we’re commonly hearing about those who sleepwalk and can’t sleep which is known as insomnia, but often we wonder why sleeping disorders are becoming a prominent issue in today’s society. Right now according to the website Wikipedia there are a total of 14 different disorders ranging from eye twitching to restless legs. Some of these problems are treatable and even preventable when monitored by a doctor or specialized health professional. Sleeping disorders can be extremely dangerous when they go undiagnosed. Many people who are suffering from this disorder are facing a lot of life threatening problems because having a sleeping disorder can disrupt you from living your normal everyday life.

This can overtake someone if they’re spending more time worrying about their condition than getting the correct amount of sleep. The problem with many people who are dealing with a sleeping disorder is that they’re not aware of it being a problem until they see it’s affecting their job and everyday life. Those who suffer from this can also develop clinical depression because they feel like they’re not able to do any of the things they’re used to doing if they’ve been diagnosed with a sleep disorder.

Individuals are given a test called the Polysomnogram which is used to determine and diagnose sleep disorders so specialists and doctors can plan a treatment designed for that individual person since not all treatments are the same. According to Wikipedia they list the common treatment options for sleeping disorders are: behavioral/psychotherapeutic, medications (Rozerem, Ambien, Ambien CR and Lunesta are common prescribed sleeping pills given for those diagnosed with a sleeping disorder), and other somatic treatments that are given. Sometimes people who have disorders such as narcolepsy usually have their brain activity measured to see where they are reaching peak points of sleeping so they can be treated since narcoleptics can’t really work on jobs that require them to operate machinery or other things because they have to be alert and awake to know what they’re doing.

Many people who are currently diagnosed with a sleeping disorder are usually treated medicinally for whatever time period the doctor prescribes and monitors the person’s condition for. Having a sleeping disorder can make people feel like they’re not normal and that they’re sick when it’s not a sickness and that you can treat the problem through medicine and proper therapy to retrain your body to sleep on a normal scale.

The average person sleeps anywhere between 6-8 hours, but the most anyone sleeps is 10 hours. It’s noted that people who sleep more than the regular number of hours tend to throw their bodies off due to the fact that naturally we sleep and awake when the day changes. It’s ideal to get the right amount of rest because of the fact that your immune system can stress out when you don’t get any kind of rest which can also trigger other medical and health issues from the lack of rest.

This can be a problem with mostly younger people because you find that lifestyles in this day and age trigger the use of drugs, drinking, smoking, and a poor diet consisting of a lot of unhealthy food choices and a lack of exercise and maintaining physical health.
